Just wanted to see if you might be keeping your career opportunities open if the right fit came along?
Currently I am not seeking other employment. There may come a time in the next three years of the state IT consolidation process where I am, but for the foreseeable future it looks like my current employment is secure.
What kind of certs would you suggest?I enjoy networking more than any other IT work i do, i have A+ and my net+ just expired. I was thinking of taking a boot camp for a cert, possibly 2 what would you suggest!
CCENT course content is one of the best courses to get a person’s feet wet and up to speed in the world of networking. JNCIA course content is also noteworthy, and Juniper has a free 5 hour course for preparing people for it. There’s a lot of Juniper specific syntax in there but it also has all the nuts and bolts of IEEE standards you’ll find on any brand of networking equipment. Juniper is a very fast growing company. Over the last year I’ve gotten to learn their OS pretty well and while I still can’t say it’s superior to NX-OS, it does have some very handy tools. Every network engineer in todays workforce will need both Juniper and Cisco fundamentals at the very least.
I was thinking about Getting CCNA with security. Do you think that would be a good start?
A very good path. It opens the door to job positions in the 50k salary range here in Oklahoma. Familiarize yourself with flow based tech (Netflow, Jflow, etc.) as well. When you start down the networking path we can talk more offline. I have a lab with 10 cisco devices and can virtualize any number of Cisco ASA and Juniper SRX firewalls. Could set you up with remote access for studies.
As far as using your lab i would enjoy that opportunity.

Dave—left you a question on the fishing forum…just noticed your a govt network guy (FIPS was a giveaway)! I’m a WAN engineer for the Fed govt, we also work with NX-OS & Juniper OS. I mostly stick to WAN systems (MPLS, Long haul telecom), but also doing lots of Cisco VoIP installs at the momemnt. Small world..
I find spending as much time outdoors fishing/hunting/camping helps offset the mental saturation of IT work. Good to meet a fellow engineer.
